Become The Eternal Space

Observing your thoughts throughout the day is practical and something you can start applying right away. This is perfect for you if you struggle with persistent negative thoughts, a specific negative thought pattern, or if you simply want more inner peace and freedom from negative emotions. The core skill is moving from identifying with your thoughts to becoming the conscious space that contains them. When you identify with worry about bills or other problems, those thoughts possess you because you feed them through identification with them. You energize the worry and it starts to shape your experience, which then creates evidence that reinforces the worry. If instead you become the space that contains those thoughts, and let that become your predominant state, everything shifts and you begin to free yourself.

You become that space by observing your thoughts. You become the conscious container for them, and that presence becomes your most common way of being. I did not always believe this was possible when I was struggling with my own thoughts, but after practicing it myself and helping many people one on one, I know it works consistently. The only time it does not work is when it is practiced incorrectly.

Here is a simple protocol you can practice throughout the day to become the space that contains your thoughts and to start deenergizing them. The purpose is for that spacious awareness to become your predominant state.

First, come into the present moment. Become aware of your internal space. Notice the thoughts, emotions, worries, and triggers that are moving through. Let them be there. Do not try to stop or push them away. There is a big difference between observing a thought and being possessed by a thought. You are simply watching. You are not the thought. You are allowing it to be and to pass.

When you judge the thoughts or try to force the thought away, you reactivate it. Instead, remain the watcher, the observer. This is your natural space. The aim is not only to reduce negative thoughts but to become the space that contains all thoughts. Practice this all throughout your day so it becomes your new baseline. You will get distracted many times. Each time, gently return to watching what is happening. You are the sky that contains the clouds. At first it may feel subtle, but with consistent practice the shift becomes profound.

A practical pointer: some people, when told to observe their thoughts, dive into analysis or try to investigate the thought content. That is not what this practice is about. Do not go into the thoughts or try to fix them. Do not try to make them go away. Stay as the neutral space that contains everything. Over time, because you are no longer fueling those thoughts, they will naturally deenergize and float away like clouds.

If you can practice this especially upon waking in the morning and anchor yourself in that empty space, it will be much easier to maintain throughout the day. It can be harder to access when you are triggered, but it is still possible. Keep returning to the watcher. Make this your predominant state. It is simple, and it changes everything.
